Case #041108: Residential Investigation, Lithonia, GA

This case involves a single- family dwelling in Lithonia , GA.  Two older sisters live there with their two cats.  The sisters have lived there since 1959 and have added 2 additional rooms upstairs on the back of the house since they have lived there.

For this investigation, the following CGPS team members were present: Kathy Porter, Phil Langford and Jarrod Persons.  The equipment used included a hand-held video camera, a digital voice recorder and digital still camera.

The claims of activity in this house included objects appearing from no where- a can of lard in the refrigerator which belonged to no one in the house. A can of soup and straw hat had also gone missing.  They also reported that one Christmas holiday, ornaments left on the dining room table were found scattered on the living room floor.  The sisters also reported feeling as if someone would sit on their beds at times and that one of their daughters even saw an “old woman” at her window one night asking for directions- after the client gave the woman the directions she just “vanished”.  The clients note that the cats seem to react to something unseen at times.

A brief history revealed that a woman named Denie Powell passed away in 1958 in the front bedroom of the house at age 85 of natural causes.  Miss Powell’s grave can be found in a family plot located at Philadelphia Baptist Church, Lithonia.  Miss. Powell never married and owned a restaurant in Lithonia at one time. The clients believe that it is Miss Powell’s spirit that lingers in the house.

We were given a tour by the clients that started in the front bedroom where Miss Powell died.  One of the sisters states she sees shadows and feels someone sit on her bed at times. Then into the living room where the Christmas ornaments had been scattered.  The  second bedroom is also where the client feels someone sit on her bed. There is also a dining room and kitchen downstairs.  Upstairs consists of a bedroom and loft area as well as attic access.  It is noted that there was also a thunderstorm during our investigation- I note this in relation to any EVPs obtained.

At 10:00 pm, after the tour, all 3 investigators began in the front bedroom collecting EVP and video evidence.  We attempted multiple times to establish contact with Miss Powell by asking questions and asking for a noise or a touch to reveal her presence- none were noted. After an hour, we left to continue in another room.

We then entered the living room located in the front of the house to continue gathering EVP and video evidence.  No contact was made via any kind of noises or object movements.  After another hour we headed to the second bedroom in the back of the house.  There while continuing EVP and video taping, lead investigator, Kathy Porter, felt as though the bed was “kicked” at times.  Neither Phil Langford or Jarrod Persons reported touching the bed at all.  Other than that, no other noises or movement were noted.

An hour later, we went upstairs to the loft and bedroom areas.  Again no activity was noted.  We opened the attic access and discovered a leak in the roof, which we later noted to the clients, but no apparent paranormal activity.

We ended the investigation in the front bedroom once again.  This time we spoke of Miss Powell’s restaurant and investigator Kathy Porter noted the smell of “old grease” several times.  Phil Langford tried asking if there was anyone else who was not Denie Powell was with us could they give us a sign, like making a noise or moving an object.  Again, no response.  The investigation ended at 12:30 am.

Evidence review:  The digital audio was reviewed by Kathy Porter and an EVP was noted from the first time in the front bedroom where Miss Powell passed away.  It was a breathy voice saying, “They’re not here.”.   The video revealed a “shadow” also in the front bedroom during the first time, but it was undecided if it was caused by the hand of the investigator with the camera, and thus not included as evidence.

Client reveal: The reveal was conducted by lead investigators  Kathy Porter and Phil Langford on the evening of Wednesday April 23, 2008 at 8:30 pm at the client’s home. The audio evidence was presented and upon hearing it the clients were intrigued.  The clients have never felt threatened at all in this house and while the voice is breathy, it didn’t seem to have a threatening inflection either.  However, the clients feel the EVP only deepens the mystery and wants CGPS to return for further investigation.  The clients are also having a new roof, siding and gutters put on in the next few weeks and both investigators and clients agree that this could stir up paranormal activity in the home.  We will contact the clients in 2-3 weeks to schedule our next investigation and , as always, we are available to the clients at any time.

Conclusion: there is paranormal activity as evidenced by the EVP.  Upon further investigation CGPS hopes to shed more light on the degree and possibly identify the source of the activity.

                                                                            Kathy Porter- founder/lead investigator CGPS

Update:  The clients had their new roof and gutters placed.  They stated that after only 2 hours of work, they both began to smell a strong odor of spagetti although neither was cooking anything.  The clients went outside and found that none of the workers were eating anything at the time.  Kathy Porter spoke to clients the week of 5/27 and they were awaiting the placement of new siding.  The clients reported that the activity had subsided at this time.  Kathy Porter then told the clients that CGPS would be at their disposal anytime and left it upto the clients to call when they need to.  The clients agreed to do so if needed.
