Case #071708: Vacated Business Investigation, Covington, GA

This case involved a 2 story brick building approximately 3200 square feet located off the square in Covington, GA.  The previous tenant had experienced footsteps in the upstairs, usually around 8:15 pm each night.  Also, doors had been known to open and close by themselves, lights turn on and off by themselves, even after all electricity had been turned off, and physical contact noted when the client’s son was touched on his shoulder by something unseen.  It is noted that the client states that even with the electricity off, the meter upstairs continues to run.  Also, the client stated that on her computer screen the words, “My name is Joseph “appeared over and over again without prompting or the client touching her computer. During an initial walk-through by CGPS team members Kathy Porter, Ken Curley and Phil Langford, Ken saw a shadow go out a room doorway into the hall as he entered the room through another doorway.  When Ken went back into the hallway, no one was present.  Kathy and Phil were in another room at the farthest point from Ken and saw no one in the hall nor were any footsteps heard.

The team members present for this investigation included, Kathy Porter (lead investigator), Ken Curley (tech manager/ investigator), Tami Curley (investigator), Cindi Norwood (investigator) and joining the group at a later time that evening, Phil Langford (lead investigator) and Jarrod Persons (investigator).  The equipment included camcorder, digital audio, digital still cameras, EMF gauges, and a baby monitor.

The camcorder was placed at the top of the stairs pointing down the hallway.  A wireless digital audio recorder was placed on the main level on top of a counter.  A second wireless audio was placed upstairs in the hallway near three small plaster busts that the client stated will be moved randomly form their original placement. The baby monitor transmitter was originally placed in the small closet space under the stairs in which the closet door would open/close by itself and the receiver was placed in the hallway upstairs.  It was hoped the monitor may pick up EVPs.

The team began the evening downstairs with only the audio/ video running upstairs without anyone near it.  At 8:15 pm the team began listening for footsteps above on the second floor.  After approximately 45 minutes, no distinct noises were heard.  The entire team then headed upstairs and positioned themselves in the hallway and several rooms. An EVP session was then started to attempt to contact any entity (ies) present. No audible voices were heard, however, as a team member requested that “Joseph” come close to the EMF gauge and make it spike up 4 times, there seemed to be a response each time the request was made.  The team then split up with Cindi and a male member upstairs and the remaining members downstairs.  The upstairs team again attempted to contact any presence.  As it appeared not to be communicating, Cindi stated that they were leaving since no contact was made.  As she stepped on the top step, the baby monitor began emitting loud “static” although no one had touched or moved it.  The team members then switched out the transmitter and placed it upstairs in the hallway and the receiver downstairs in the main room. Ken and Kathy then went upstairs.  It was during this EVP attempt that responses were heard by the members downstairs.  Phil and Jarrod then arrived and spent some time upstairs with the same apparent “conversation” between them and what sounded like a male voice responding “I’m trying, I’m trying.” The investigation ended approximately 11 pm.

Evidence review; the audio revealed several EVPs.  One sounding like a female or child saying “please I’m frightened and alone” that was obtained upstairs.  Another was recorded, again upstairs and this time seemed like one- or -two males saying “Yes, yeah, hello?”   The next two were from upstairs also, one as Phil stated, “If you’re not gonna talk to us then we’re leaving” to which there is a multi-syllable response with inflection that was not decipherable, and again there appeared to be a ‘conversation” between Cindi and an unseen entity that was again not decipherable.

The video didn’t reveal any visual anomalies, but several other audio ones.  While the video camera sat atop the stairs with no one present, there was a voice that appeared to say, “I’m not”. Then several “taps” on the camcorder microphone are heard along with what sounds like something handling the camera.  The last audio was when Cindi and another investigator were upstairs attempting to get another response with their EMF gauge and a voice can be heard again saying something like, “can you hear me?”

Client reveal; The EVPs were played via audio and video for the client.  The client was intrigued and felt validated that her experiences were real and now had documentation.  An audio CD and video tape were given to the client. She had stated that a few days after our investigation, a key to the former building that had been missing for weeks simply appeared in the hallway outside her new office after the door chime rang but the door didn’t open .  No other activity has occurred since then. The client was assured that at no time did any CGPS team member feel threatened by any presence in the building.  The client is also assured that CGPS is available to her and/ or the future tenant of the site at anytime.

Conclusion; CGPS believes that the building has paranormal activity and is indeed haunted but with no mal-intent from the entity (ies).
